Pécs…when, where, why, what, who!
Pécs:
half-road between Sarajevo and Budapest
So here we are, with lump in the throat but the heart full, leaving Sarajevo towards Hungary, with an halfway stop in Pécs (where? On the borderline between Bosnia and Hungary)…
Maybe someone will hask..why Pécs?
No idea! In our case, only in order to divide the road to Budapest, not for the number of kilometers (only a few more then 500)….but only because for us travelling means trying to LIVE the places that we touch as much as possible.
So we wonted to visit another urban reality in addition to Budapest.
After all, it was a really good choice, curves not really heavy, throw mountains and rivers…green reflected in blue water full of fishes, more and more infrequent in western Europe.
Only a little problem: sometimes there was mud on the street because of abundant rains of past days that causes water flow toward rivers. a little fiddly but not so difficult thanks to a lot of diggers on the road.
But at a certain point, we really had fear…
More than 20 km of queue…we tought about an accident: it was not. It was a farmers’ protest! They were sittin’ on the street, and there was police and local television.
A policeman stopped us saying we can’t move.
190 km of very slow roads were waiting for us and it was 3 p.m. yet!!!!
But exactly in the moment in wich the policeman killed our hopes of going on,
bosniac heart help us: an old farmer gets colser, looks at the motorbike, at the italian sticker in the front of the ciccions, at the bosniac flag on the baggage, mumbles something..
we only said: “Italian, Budapest!”, he makes a sign saying “wait”, goes to the policeman, says something
and then comes back, making signs to say that we can pass. He indicated a road in a cave and let us pass by…
On the road again toward Pecs.
At about 70 km from arrival, we were still in Bosnia, and stopped eating in a little town.
we love staying with local people and FAR AWAY turistic restaurants, ever the same and ever the same plate, and the choice was really perfect: we stopped in a little “restaurant” that prepared home made meat.
They didn’t speak neither a word in english.
They didn’t understand our signs.
We NEED to eat.
So Pasquale used the only word we know in their language: “CEVAPICICI”
Cevapicici saved us.
Bread with cevapicici…the best we’ve never eat!!!
Price? Two bread wheels, 20 cevapicici, coke and coffee..10 bosniac marks (5 euros)…
and a very smiling stomach!!
Just landed in Pécs, with accomodation in an hostel very young and clean (you can find it here: Joker hostel).
The Ciccions was safe all night long and the boy of reception was really willing!
Masterpiece? The wonderful kitchen!!!!!!!!! Heartily recommended!!!! Take a look:
We organized, leaved the baggages and go into the city in order to take a look.
Unfortunately all shop were closed and the city is really pretty but empty 🙁
clean and airy…an universitarian city with a beautiful square (Piazza Széchenyi)
and historical center, a cathedral that seems wonderful but that we couldn’t visit.
As alredy said, for us Pécs was only a city for an intermediate stop.
